Taking Control

Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow presents a framework for understanding human decision-making. He introduces two modes of thought:

  • System 1: Fast, instinctive, emotional thinking.

  • System 2: Slow, deliberate, logical thinking.

System 1 is efficient but prone to biases. System 2 is accurate but effortful and slower. Kahneman's key argument is that most errors in judgement stem from over-reliance on System 1, without appropriate intervention by System 2.

For managers, recognising which system is active – and knowing how to manage the transition between them – can dramatically improve leadership, decision quality, and team performance.

Making It Happen

Step 1: Train Yourself to Recognise System 1 Thinking

  • Action: When you make a decision quickly and with high confidence, pause briefly.

  • Indicator: If the answer feels obvious or intuitive without much thought, System 1 is likely active.

  • Tool: Keep a simple log of rapid decisions for one week to identify patterns.
